Yes, we love them Sam I Am!
This week in Kindergarten we are celebrating one of my favorite holidays all year...Dr. Seuss's birthday. What's that you say? This is not a recognized holiday? Well I don't care and it should be! This is one of my very favorite times of the year because there are so many great activities that we can do using Dr Seuss's wonderful books. Write your congressman and let them know this needs to be a national holiday!
I'm mostly kidding, but this is seriously one of my favorite "holidays" to celebrate with my class, only getting beat out by Christmas. Seriously.
To start off our Seuss-tastic celebration week, we made the most delicious dish you can have during Dr. Seuss's birthday: Green Eggs and Ham.
We started out discussing all of the different things that you need when you want to cook something. The children told me that you needed ingredients and then I taught them about recipes. We discussed what would happen if you didn't know what to do or what you needed or in what order to do things. The children shared with me times that they or their family members had tried to cook and made mistakes by not following the directions. I explained to them that a recipe is very important when cooking because it gives you all of the information that you need to get started.
So, we started by making our own recipe. The children were given recipe cards and had to put them in the order that made sense so that we could make our green eggs and ham. We discussed what might go wrong if we did the steps out of order and how important it was to make sure that you follow recipes in order so that you can cook whatever it is you're trying to cook.
Recipe for Green Eggs and Ham |
Once we knew what we were doing, it was time to get started! All of the children jumped at the chance to crack our eggs--and most of them were really good at it! They must have experience in their kitchens at home!
Next, we added green dye to our eggs.
Then, we had to mix them up. The kids each got a turn to mix the eggs a little bit and were very interested in watching how they slowly turned green!
Then it was time to get cooking! First the eggs and then by adding ham.
Finally it was the moment we'd all been waiting for...time to EAT the eggs!
And, of course, how could we eat green eggs and ham without watching Green Eggs and Ham?! We were able to enjoy a video version of the classic story on the big screen in the board room while we ate. All in all, a perfect morning in Mrs. Tucker's class!
Stay tuned for more Seuss-tastic fun throughout the week!!!
